Description
Purple velvet cake brings a regal twist to classic Southern desserts with a rich cream cheese frosting and delicate crumb, perfect for special celebrations.
Ingredients
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tbsps unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp purple gel food coloring
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 12 tbsps heavy cream (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line cake pans.
- Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cream butter, oil, and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract and vinegar.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the mixture for smooth batter.
- Add purple gel food coloring to achieve desired shade.
- Pour batter into pans and bake 25–30 minutes. Test with a toothpick.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
- For frosting, blend cream cheese and butter, gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Adjust with heavy cream for consistency.
- Layer cake with frosting, top with second layer, and frost exterior. Decorate as desired.
