Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 5–6 tablespoons water
- Food coloring, as needed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F).
- In a small bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth.
- Beat in egg and vanilla.
- Gradually mix in dry ingredients.
- Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Cut into heart shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
- Bake 8–10 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
- Cool completely on wire racks.
- Beat meringue powder, powdered sugar, and water until stiff peaks form.
- Divide icing and color as desired.
- Decorate cookies and allow icing to fully dry before storing.
