Description

Hashweh is a comforting Lebanese dish of spiced rice mixed with savory ground meat and crunchy toasted nuts. It’s rich, aromatic, and perfect for weeknight dinners or special gatherings.

Ingredients

  • For the Meat and Rice:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 lb ground beef (or lamb)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups basmati rice, rinsed
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • For Garnish:
  • 1/3 cup toasted pine nuts
  • 1/3 cup slivered almonds
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and cook until translucent (4–5 minutes).
  2. Add ground beef and garlic, breaking up the meat, and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in cinnamon, allspice, cumin, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Add rinsed rice and stir to coat, lightly toasting for 2 minutes.
  5. Pour in chicken broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  6. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes without stirring.
  7. Remove from heat and let sit covered for 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff rice with a fork and transfer to a serving dish.
  9. Top with toasted pine nuts, almonds, and fresh parsley before serving.
