Description
Cheesy and savory baked gnocchi with caramelized French onions, simmered in a rich onion-broth sauce and topped with melted Gruyere or Swiss cheese.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup white wine
- Salt, to taste
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 2 cups beef broth
- Pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp fresh minced thyme (or 1 tsp dried)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb gnocchi (fresh or frozen)
- 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
- 8–10 slices French bread (for serving)
- 1 cup shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, melt olive oil and butter together.
- Add thinly sliced onion and cook for about 20 minutes until deeply caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally.
- Pour in white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up browned bits. Add thyme and beef broth, then bring to a simmer.
- Add gnocchi and stir occasionally over medium heat until tender and sauce thickens, about 5–10 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish.
- Top with shredded cheese and bake for 20–25 minutes until cheese is lightly browned and gnocchi is bubbly.
- Cool slightly before serving. Serve with French bread slices on the side.
Notes
- Slowly caramelizing onions enhances sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Gruyere cheese adds a deeper flavor than Swiss, but both work well.
- Perfect served with toasted bread for dipping.
