Description
Vegan Pupusa is an easy and inexpensive Salvadorian recipe made with masa harina and filled with vegan cheese. These hearty pupusas are cooked until golden and are delicious served with curtido and salsa.
Ingredients
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup vegan cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons oil
Instructions
- Stir together the masa harina and salt in a large bowl. Add the warm water and knead together to form a dough ball.
- Place the extra water and oil in a bowl. Dip your hands in the mixture to coat them, which will help prevent the dough from sticking.
- Separate the dough into 6-8 equal balls. Flatten each dough ball into a disk using both hands, about 3 inches wide.
- Add about 1 tablespoon of shredded vegan cheese to the center of each disk. Bring the sides of the dough around the cheese and pinch the edges together to seal.
- Flatten each filled dough ball into a disk about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Lightly brush with oil, add the pupusas, and cook on both sides until heated through and golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Serve warm with curtido and salsa.
Notes
- Coat your hands with the water and oil mixture when shaping the pupusas to prevent the dough from sticking.
- Pupusas are delicious served with curtido and salsa.
